Customer Complaint
The customer reported poor print quality on all printed pages. An internal test page revealed two distinct defects:
- A solid black vertical band running from the top to the bottom of the page.
- Severe vertical color smearing affecting the cyan and magenta areas of the print.
Because both defects appeared together, it was initially unclear whether they originated from the same component.
Initial Inspection
The first test page confirmed two different print quality issues.
Defect 1 – Black Vertical Band
A continuous black band appeared in the same position on every page.
This symptom is commonly associated with problems in the black imaging system, including:

The Developer Unit was replaced as part of the troubleshooting process.
After initialization and image stabilization, another test page was printed.
Result
No improvement.
The vertical color smearing remained exactly the same.
Re-evaluating the Diagnosis
At this stage, several observations became important:
- The black band had already been eliminated.
- The remaining defect affected multiple colors.
- Replacing the developer unit produced no improvement.
- The smearing extended continuously through the full page length.
These observations suggested that the problem was occurring after the toner images had been developed.
The investigation therefore shifted to the transfer system.
Root Cause
Inspection of the transfer assembly identified the Intermediate Transfer Belt (ITB) Unit as the source of the remaining defect.
The ITB combines the toner images from all four drum units before transferring the final image to the paper. When the belt surface becomes worn or contaminated, toner can smear as it moves across the belt, producing continuous vertical color streaks.
Final Repair
The Intermediate Transfer Belt Unit was replaced.
After installation, the machine completed image stabilization and another internal test page was printed.
Result
The vertical color smearing disappeared completely.
Print quality returned to normal.
Lessons Learned
This repair illustrates an important diagnostic lesson:
Do not assume that every print defect has the same cause.
In this case:
- The black vertical band was caused by a failed Black Drum Unit.
