The Complaint

The test page came back looking dirty in a way that was hard to pin down at first glance — small, scattered specks of toner in different colors, no obvious pattern, showing up on the plain white margins just as much as inside the color patches. Why “Random” Is the Key Word

A defect that lands in the same lateral position on every page comes from something stationary contacting the sheet at a fixed point. This defect was neither — the specks had no consistent interval and no consistent lane. That rules out a rotating component with one bad spot and a stationary component with a fixed defect, and points instead at something shedding loose material unpredictably as the sheet passes through.

The ITB is the component most often responsible for exactly that kind of symptom. Once its surface or its cleaning system starts breaking down, it stops being a clean, controlled hand-off point for toner and starts shedding small amounts unpredictably — different amount, different position, every page.

Diagnostic Process

Several consecutive prints were checked to confirm the speckling was genuinely random rather than a subtle pattern being missed — position and density varied sheet to sheet, supporting a belt/cleaning-system cause over anything periodic or fixed. The toner supply area was checked for a leaking cartridge or spilled toner inside the unit, which would produce a similar-looking symptom; nothing was found there. The ITB itself was then inspected directly and showed a hazy, contaminated surface rather than a clean, uniform one.

The Fix

The transfer belt was replaced.

Result

A reprint of the same light-gradient test page after the swap came back clean — no speckling anywhere on the sheet, including the previously affected white margins.
